Your reps spend only 40% of the day selling. The late quote is the symptom.
Salesforce finds the average seller spends just 40% of their time selling. For $3k-$15k technical products, the late quote is the symptom.
Salesforce's seventh-edition State of Sales report, based on a survey of 4,050 sales professionals across 22 countries, finds that the average seller spends 40% of their time actually selling. The other 60% goes somewhere else.
Read as a productivity statistic, that is a management problem. Read as a conversion statistic — which is what it becomes for anyone selling a $3,000 to $15,000 technical product — it is the reason a buyer who asked for pricing on Tuesday hears back on Friday. The late quote is not a character flaw in your sales team. It is arithmetic.
The missing 60% has a shape
The report breaks the average sales week into named activities. Selling — customer meetings and prospecting — accounts for the 40%. The remainder is divided across planning, training, manual data entry, and creating quotes. Quote creation is not incidental to the non-selling majority. It is one of its named line items.
The burden is not distributed evenly. Gen Z reps sit at just 35% selling time, losing approximately two full hours each week to manual data entry that senior reps spend researching prospects and building relationships. In most merchant teams, junior reps are exactly the people staffing inbound quote requests. The person closest to your highest-intent buyers is the person furthest from selling.
Complexity is real. The delay is optional.
Technical products earn their quoting complexity. A $12,000 aesthetic laser platform is not one SKU: it is a base unit, a handpiece selection, a consumables commitment, a warranty tier, installation, and operator training, and the mix shifts depending on whether the buyer is a single-room medspa or a three-clinic group. A three-group commercial espresso machine carries single-phase versus three-phase electrical, plumbing and water treatment, a grinder pairing that has to match service throughput, and a maintenance contract priced by region. A micro-manufacturing shop quoting a benchtop CNC package has to reconcile tooling, fixturing, and lead times that change what can honestly be promised.
None of that is unreasonable. It is the product. What is unreasonable is that assembling it costs a rep three days of interrupted attention, a spreadsheet, two messages to operations, and a PDF built by hand.
Buyers are not growing more patient in the meantime. In the same survey, 57% of sales professionals say customers take longer to decide than they used to. A longer deliberation window means more competitors get seen. Every day your quote sits in progress is a day someone else's quote is in the buyer's inbox.
Rules your rep should not have to remember
Faster quoting is worthless if it means faster mistakes. The reason quoting stays manual in technical categories is that the rules are load-bearing: B2B customer groups with negotiated price lists, volume breaks, freight that varies by destination and crate size, approval thresholds above a given discount, and configurations that are simply invalid — a handpiece that does not fit the platform, a grinder that cannot keep pace with the machine it is paired to.
Those rules are also exactly what software handles well. Encoded once, they execute identically at 9am on Monday and at 6pm on Friday. That matters, because manual work is where accuracy degrades: manual errors rank as the top data issue among sales teams using AI agents, and 46% of sales pros with agents say data quality issues have hurt their sales.
The fix is not another browser tab. Teams without an all-in-one platform run an average of eight standalone tools, and 42% of sales reps say they are overwhelmed by the volume. Quoting belongs where the catalogue, pricing, and customer records already live — inside Shopify — not in a parallel system a rep has to reconcile by hand every time a price changes.
In practice the shift is unglamorous. The rep opens the customer record, selects the platform and its options, and the system applies the right price list, blocks the incompatible handpiece, adds freight for the destination, and flags the discount that needs a manager's sign-off before the quote can send. What used to be a three-day reconstruction of tribal knowledge becomes a ten-minute review of a document the rep can defend line by line. The expertise does not disappear. It moves from the rep's memory into the system, where it is available to every rep on every deal.
Reclaimed time is the whole point
This is not a speculative automation target. Salesforce's respondents rank creating quotes as the third most common use case for AI agents in sales, behind order fulfilment and product usage tracking. Teams that adopt agents reach for quoting early, because it is high-volume, rule-governed, and directly attached to revenue.
The payoff shows up on the buyer's side as well. Gartner's March 2026 survey of 646 B2B buyers found that 67% prefer a rep-free experience, and Gartner also reports that buyers are 1.8 times more likely to complete a high-quality deal when they engage with supplier-provided digital tools in partnership with a sales rep rather than independently. The winning configuration is neither a rep replaced by a self-serve checkout nor a rep hand-building PDFs. It is a rep equipped with tooling that produces an accurate, branded, rule-checked quote in minutes, then spending the recovered hours on the work only a person can do: understanding the clinic's patient volume, the roaster's expansion plan, the machine shop's tolerance requirements.
That is what automated, rule-aware quoting actually buys. Not a percentage point of efficiency on a dashboard, but a structural change in where the week goes. A rep who no longer has to say "I'll get back to you" is a rep who spends that conversation qualifying, configuring, and closing instead of apologising.
Start by measuring one number: the median hours between a quote request arriving and the quote landing in the buyer's inbox. If that number is measured in days, the cause is a system, not effort. The reps are already working. They are simply working on the 60%.
Quotiv builds rule-aware quoting directly into Shopify, so pricing tiers, volume breaks, freight, and valid configurations are applied automatically and your team sends an accurate quote on the first pass.
